Putting the cows out to pasture

November 20, 2015 by Michael Logan

dead cow

The cows are dead. Long live the cows!

I’ve noticed that quite a few people who read World War Moo are assuming there will be a third instalment. I guess that’s understandable, given that three is the thing (a trend also observable over the last few thousand years in certain big religions).

However, barring a drastic change of heart, there will not be a third cow novel. Yes, the ending of World War Moo is somewhat open, but that’s because I like open endings. I like to leave it up to the reader to figure out what comes next, to build new stories in their heads for the characters. Hell, if anybody wants to go off and write what happens next, feel free. I’d be interested to see where you think Geldof and chums end up, providing they avoid being fried to a crisp. I’d like to think they live happily ever after in a cave, growing their own herbal entertainment and foraging for mushrooms.

I have too many other stories in my head that need to come out. They will come, once they stop wrestling with each other for dominance, and once I find a way to silence the inner voice assuring me that my writing is shit and I may as well pack it in.

Anyway, even if I did want to write a third one, my publisher wouldn’t touch it given the pitiful sales of World War Moo. Readers of that novel are few, so, if you have taken the plunge, give yourself a pat on the back for becoming part of an elite clique.

So, there we are. Sorry if anybody feels let down, but the cows need to go out to pasture.

My top reads in 2015

September 25, 2015 by Michael Logan

It’s been a busy year—the arrival of another mini-me, work pressure, finishing another novel—so I haven’t read as much as I would have liked. However, amidst the 40 or so books I did manage, there were quite a few crackers. It’s probably a bit early, but the following three are my favourite books of 2015 (read this year, not necessarily published this year).

I’d highly recommend you get out there and read them—particularly the first two, which deserve a wider audience. [Read more…]

Hell’s Detective: Lost Angeles sample to celebrate new website launch

September 23, 2015 by Michael Logan

Evil MichaelAs you may have noticed from the proliferation of shiny around you, I have finally built a new website for all things bookish.

To mark this momentous occasion, which I believe may have momentarily stopped the globe from rotating (this may be why you felt several pounds lighter for 0.2 milliseconds at 3pm yesterday), I’ll be featuring lots of content in the coming weeks and months: largely short stories and novel extracts.

Kicking us off we have the first three chapters from my next novel, Hell’s Detective: Lost Angeles, a noir set in Hell. Hell’s Detective is a slight departure from previous works, in that it isn’t an out-and-out comedy. You will, however, find a light sprinkling of jokes therein.

As I don’t have a cover yet, this post is accompanied by an artist’s impression of what I might look like if I were a denizen of Hell. The artist should probably learn to draw better, but he really can’t be bothered.

I can’t tell you when this novel is going to be released. It’s still limping around the rain-drenched streets, tapping on the brightly lit windows of agents and publishers, smiling wanly and hoping they invite it in for champagne and caviar, rather than drawing the curtains and sending out the servants to beat it bloody with a dirty broom.

UPDATE, 0310/2015: Link to novel sample and blurb removed (it was only ever going to be up temporarily).

Enjoy!

Charlie Hebdo Cartoon of Aylan Kurdi Wrong for One Reason: It Lacked Humanity

September 15, 2015 by Michael Logan

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘charm offensive’. ‘Offensive offensive’ is never used, but I can think of no phrase better suited to what Charlie Hebdo is doing right now. You know I’m talking about the latest cartoon, depicting the lifeless body of Aylan Kurdi lying just short of a billboard offering a two-for-one meal deal.

I’m not going to bother getting into whether the message is mocking the victim or mocking western culture. It’s irrelevant. This cartoon is wrong for one simple reason: it has the power to bring untold upset to the father and family members of the little boy who died.

Free novel

July 5, 2015 by Michael Logan

With only a week to go until the International Thriller Writers 2015 awards are announced, I’m giving away free kindle editions of Wannabes, which is on the shortlist for the best ebook original, until Wednesday, July 8.

You can download it from the UK and US Amazon stores free of charge until then.

It has a 4.56 rating on Goodreads and blah, blah, blah. The blurb follows:

From the winner of the inaugural Terry Pratchett First Novel Prize comes a new satire, which has been shortlisted for the International Thriller Writers Best E-Book Original Novel 2015 Award.

Celebrities are mobbing London’s laser clinics as a deranged wannabe bumps off A-listers, believing he can absorb their powers and become famous by taping their tattoos to his body.

Washed-up pop star Jackie Thunder isn’t joining the stampede. Jackie figures that if he can get on the killer’s hit list, without the inconvenience of actually being murdered, he’ll gain the publicity needed to reignite his career.

But there’s more at stake than Jackie can possibly imagine. Guiding the killer is Murmur, a minor demon with his own agenda to make a name for himself, and Jackie becomes an unwitting pawn in a decades-old plot to destroy great music through murder, mayhem and manipulation.

With humanity’s collective soul at stake, how far will Jackie go to reach the top?
